Tout le mois : Vikings: Beyond the Legend at Melbourne Museum

You’ve seen the TV series and you’ve heard the stories of savagery associated with the Vikings, now see them for what they really were. Recent archaeological discoveries have challenged our image of Vikings as pillaging and plundering pagans in horned helmets. Vikings: Beyond the Legend brings this rich, often-misunderstood culture to life, debunking stereotypes and providing insights into Viking domestic life, rituals and beliefs. At Melbourne Museum, over 450 artefacts come together to form the largest collection of its kind displayed in Australia. Among the rare treasures on show are the stunning skeletal remains of a Viking longship, one of the finest Thor’s-hammer pendants ever found, and Viking swords dating from 700 AD to 1100 AD. Tout le mois : Wonderland à l’ACMI

L’exposition-événement à ne pas manquer pour tous les amateurs de Lewis Carroll est à Melbourne en première mondiale. Avec les 40 films et 30 œuvres télévisuelles qui ont raconté les aventures de la petite Alice, c’est toute l’histoire du cinéma et des effets spéciaux qui se déroule sous vos yeux. En outre, l’exposition réunit 300 objets rares – dont des livres, costumes, dessins… – et profite de la présence de nombreux conférenciers qui vont interroger l’oeuvre mais aussi la féminité ou le jeu d’acteur. Tout le mois : Grandmothers

Featuring stories of grandmothers from across Melbourne, Multicultural Museums Victoria presents its inaugural joint project — ‘Grandmothers’. Through five extraordinary exhibitions and accompanying events, come and celebrate the accomplishments, wisdom and the central role of the grandmother in Chinese, Italian, Greek, Muslim and Jewish communities. The ‘Grandmothers’ project pays tribute to this diverse group of women who, as custodians of culture and tradition, pass on their knowledge, culture and history from generation to generation. Through striking portraits and artworks, recipes and flavours, tales of war, survival and migration, language, religious texts and traditional objects, each exhibition positions the grandmother at the forefront of family and community history. They provide new inspiring ways of telling the stories of grandmothers, whose voices have been silenced or absent from historical narratives. More info here.

Tout le mois : Rocky Road Festival of Flavours

Yarra Valley Chocolaterie’s chocolatiers will be giving the classic Aussie Rocky Road treat a makeover throughout May with their annual Rocky Road Festival. Rocky Road temptations will take the form of hand made blocks, bars, truffles, ice creams and desserts using couverture chocolate with seasonal and exotic ingredients. Look out for their three-metre long cabinet of Rocky Road temptations where you can pick and mix from 31 different flavours or seek out limited edition bars and blocks to purchase in the showroom. Sweet tooths will love the special menu of Rocky Road infused desserts, ice creams, sundaes, waffles and Rockin’ Hot Chocolates on offer from the all-day café. Rocky Road devotees will be able to join the Rock Around the Block Classes which kicks off with a Rockin’ Hot Chocolate, samples of six different Rocky Road flavours, a Rocky Road ice cream treat and then the chance to create your very own Rocky Road block to take home. Tous les vendredis soirs du mois : Planetarium Nights

On Friday nights the Melbourne Planetarium reawakens after hours for adults only with a stellar line-up of fulldome film screenings. Journey through fluorescent coral reefs, marvel at the cosmos, dive into black holes and get ready for an alien invasion in the latest Melbourne Planetarium showcase of films on the dome. There are two screenings a night. The 7.30pm session focuses on astronomy and also features What’s in the Sky Tonight (WITST), a presenter-led tour through the night sky. Jusqu’au jeudi 17 mai : Human Rights Arts and Film Festival

Spanning documentary, drama, animation and more, the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival’s diverse program of film premières, arts and speaker events will introduce you to incredible people and fascinating places. Kicking off in Melbourne then touring nationally, this entertaining and innovative program seeks to inform, engage, inspire and drive conversation on human rights issues. Du lundi 7 au dimanche 13 mai : Melbourne Knowledge Week

MKW 2018 will take place from Monday 7 to Sunday 13 May with an exciting program of events focussed on connecting people, place, research and technology to imagine the city of the future.In 2018, the festival will be a test site where together with Melburnians we will tackle the urgent, the everyday and the obscure issues facing our future. With lectures, performances, urban expeditions, games, workshops, conversations, labs, maker spaces and parties, it will be a celebration of Melbourne’s residents, professionals, businesses, scientists, artists, designers, questioners, thinkers and everyone who is dreaming out loud. Le vendredi 11 mai : Changwon K-Pop World Festival – preliminary round

Watch K-pop starts sing and dance their hearts out to impress the judges at Fed Square? The Changwon K-Pop World Festival Melbourne preliminary round will be held at Deakin Edge at Federation Square, and entry is free to watch. This international competition, which originates from the city of Changwon in South Korea, will held its first rounds in Melbourne for the 5th time. Participants will either sing or dance, in groups or alone, for their chance to be flown to South Korea and perform at the 2018 Changwon K-Pop World Festival. More info can be found here.

Du vendredi 11 au dimanche 20 mai : Good Beer Week

Good Beer Week is Australia’s preeminent beer event, one that has inspired smaller imitators interstate and in New Zealand. It is the biggest single platform for local brewers and beer businesses to showcase themselves to a broad audience, and also plays host to the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBAs) and the three-day GABS 2018, Beer, Cider, Food Festival at the Royal Exhibition Building. In 2018, Good Beer Week brings together more than 300 events at 180 venues across ten days from May 11 to 20. These events range from beer and food matching dinners to live music gigs, meet the brewer events and introductory classes for those new to the beer scene. Samedi 12 et dimanche 13 mai : Big Vegan Market

The Big Vegan Market is back for 2018, and this time there are some big changes about. Firstly, the markets are a lot bigger so you’ll have a lot more room to move about and browse all the wonderful stalls without it being too crowded. Also, and very importantly, it is now a 2 day market! Over the Saturday and Sunday of the Mother’s Day weekend (12th and 13th of May), you can come and shop from the huge variety of 100% vegan products at the beautiful Royal Exhibition Hall. Le samedi 26 mai : Hip Hop High Tea

Rizky’s Hip Hop High Tea is back in 2018! It’s been a while since the last pour of tea at MzRizk’s Hip Hop High Tea… now that the colder months are approaching, Rizky thinks it’s time to get comfy and warm up your soul with delicious vegan fare and exquisite teas whilst bumpin’ along to some throwback RNB jams from the 90s and early 2000s! MzRizk will be collaborating with local teahouse & apothecary Beit e’Shai, who will be serving their organic teas throughout the sitting. All teas and tisanes are handmade using 100% natural blends from certified organic ingredients. Head Chef Jarrod Moore will be designing an all vegan menu that includes vegan savouries and sweets. Rizky’s Hip Hop High Tea will take place at Belleville on Saturday May 25 from 2pm – 4pm. Located in a Heritage-Listed building just off Little Bourke Street and inspired by a dive bar in Paris, it is the perfect space to enjoy a few cups of tea with friends and family.
