Described as the world’s most recognised Japanese restaurant, Nobu opened in Melbourne at Crown in 2007. Executive chef, Nobu Matsuhisa, is the chef proprietor of the Nobu restaurants across the globe. After establishing a successful restaurant in Beverly Hills, customer and friend, Robert de Niro encouraged Nobu to open an eponymous restaurant, with the first Nobu restaurant opening in New York in 1994 . There are now 25 restaurants in 21 different cities around the world.
Well located at Southbank as part of the Crown Entertainment Complex, Nobu is refined and elegant, with a masculine ambience. There are water views over the Yarra River, Nobu is ideal for an intimate dinner, but equally enjoyable for a more casual lunch or with a larger group to enjoy a special celebration.
The food at Nobu is described as “New Style” Japanese food. All the traditional options of sushi, sashimi, tempura are available but with a slight twist. A must have is the signature Black Cod Miso. The cod is imported from Japan and marinated in a miso based paste. It is then roasted and served. It is delicious with a beautiful texture and well worth trying to understand Nobu philosophy of “new style” Japanese. Also delicious is the King Crab leg Amazu Ponzu. Coated and then fried in a light tempura batter, the king crab leg is meaty and well complemented by the ponzu sauce. Another option is the tiradito, which draws on Nobu’s Peruvian influences The raw fish is prepared in a ceviche style and is a fresh and appetising option.
“The PSST! You may expect Nobu to be expensive and it could be perceived as a “special occasion”” restaurant. However, you will be surprised by the options on the menu to enjoy an excellent Japanese meal at a world class restaurant without blowing the budget. Try lunch and sample several of the excellent options available via a bento box.”
