À Paris, le début de l’été est marqué par l’une des plus importantes compétitions de tennis au monde. Le tournoi de Roland-Garros, aussi connu sous le nom de French Open, est l’un des quatre tournois du Grand Chelem avec l’Open d’Australie, Wimbledon et l’US Open.
Cependant, à la différence des trois autres cités, Roland-Garros se déroule sur une surface atypique : la terre battue. Ce terrain, reconnaissable à sa couleur orange, est particulièrement exigeant pour les tennismen. Le tournoi parisien est donc considéré comme l’une des compétitions les plus difficiles du monde. Mais au fait, qui a créé Roland-Garros ? Et, surtout, d’où vient son nom ?
Avant de devenir un rendez-vous incontournable du mois de juin, Roland Garros était un aviateur. Né sur l’île de la Réunion en 1888, ce dernier n’a jamais été un joueur de tennis professionnel : son sport de prédilection était le rugby. En revanche, il s’est illustré en devenant l’un des pionniers de l’aviation. En 1913, Roland Garros a traversé la mer Méditerranée à bord de son avion personnel. Personne ne l’avait jamais fait avant lui, et cet exploit fit de lui l’un des aviateurs les plus célèbres de son temps. Il fut tué en octobre 1918, un mois avant la fin de la Première Guerre Mondiale.
Si Roland Garros était décédé, son souvenir fut entretenu par son ami Henri Lesieur. En 1927, ce dernier exigea que l’on donne le nom de Roland au nouveau stade de tennis construit dans le quartier parisien d’Auteuil. Le stade Roland-Garros ouvrit l’année suivante, et il devient le théâtre des Internationaux de France, compétition annuelle rassemblant les plus grands joueurs de tennis du monde. Depuis 1928, ce tournoi a lieu au stade Roland-Garros, et les amateurs le surnomment donc « Roland-Garros », pour rendre hommage à un grand sportif et illustre aviateur.
Pourtant, le French Open est né avant Roland Garros. C’est en 1891 qu’une fédération sportive organise la première édition des Championnats de France de tennis. À l’époque, le tennis vient de naître et le tournoi est réservé aux joueurs amateurs. Les tennismen ne jouent pas sur la terre, mais sur l’herbe. La terre battue n’apparaît qu’en 1912, et les « Internationaux de France » remplacent les « Championnats de France » en 1925. Les joueurs français les plus emblématiques de cette période sont les « Mousquetaires » ( René Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet ) mais aussi Suzanne Lenglen et Julie Vlasto chez les dames. Petit à petit, le tournoi de Roland-Garros se développe et obtient une notoriété internationale.
La guerre marque un coup d’arrêt entre 1939 et 1945, avant que les années 60 ne soient marquées par une écrasante domination des Australiens, tels que Rod Laver. On parle même de « décennie australienne ». En 1968, Roland-Garros s’ouvre enfin aux joueurs professionnels : c’est le début de l’ère Open, l’ère ouverte. Le principal artisan de cette métamorphose est Philippe Chatrier, le capitaine de l’équipe de France. Désormais, le court central du stade Roland-Garros – rénové cette année ! – porte son nom. Cela fait maintenant cinquante ans que les Internationaux de France de tennis sont ouverts à toutes les joueuses et tous les joueurs, quel que soit leur classement ou leur nationalité. Chaque année, près de 500 000 spectateurs viennent à Paris pour assister à l’un des matchs du tournoi.
Entre 1968 et 2019, de nombreuses personnalités du tennis ont marqué Roland-Garros de leur empreinte : Björn Borg, Yannick Noah, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Justine Henin et, bien sûr, Rafael Nadal, recordman du nombre de victoires avec 11 tournois remportés entre 2005 et 2018.

In Paris, the main event of the month of May is the beginning of a major tournament, the French Open. Its other name is Roland-Garros, and it is part of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments.
However, in this precise competition, games take place on an atypical surface : clay. This surface is particularly challenging for the players, and Roland-Garros is therefore considered as one of the hardest tennis tournaments of the year. Who has created Roland-Garros ? And, by the way, where does its name come from ?
Far from being a famous sporting event, Roland Garros was, in the first place, a person. Born in 1888, Roland Garros was barely related to tennis. His area of expertise was aviation, and he became one of the most talented pilots of his generation. In 1913, Roland Garros managed to cross the Mediterranean Sea by plane, a feat that had never been accomplished before. He was killed in October 1918, a month before the end of the World War I.
After the death of Roland Garros, his memory has been maintained by his friend Henri Lesieur. In 1927, the latter gave the name of Roland Garros to the tennis stadium newly erected in the Parisian district of Auteuil. In 1928, the Roland-Garros Arena became the official venue of the French Open, and since this date the tournament is nicknamed « Roland-Garros » by the purists, in order to pay tribute to a well-known sportsman and a pioneer of aviation.
However, the creation of the French Open is anterior to the birth of Roland Garros. Indeed, the first edition of the French Championships has been organised in 1891. At that time, the tennis was living its first years and the tournament was reserved to amateur players. Furthermore, the competitors were playing on the grass, as the clay only appeared in 1912. In 1925, the French Championships became an international event. In the 1920s, the most emblematic representants of the « French touch » were the « Musketeers » ( René Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet ), but also Suzanne Lenglen and Julie Viasto. Little by little, Roland-Garros became a notorious competition.
Between 1939 and 1945, the war marked a pause in the development process of the competition. After that, Australian players such as Rod Laver widely dominated the 1960s. This period is even known as the « Australian decade ». In 1968, Roland-Garros became open to professional sportsmen as well as amateurs. This was the beginning of the Open Era. The main instigator of this metamorphosis is Philippe Chatrier, the captain of the French national team. Chatrier gave his name to the central court of the Roland-Garros Stadium, which has been renovated this year. For fifty years, the French Open has been contested by hundreds of players from various origins and nationalities. In 2018, the event, which lasts for three weeks, has been visited by almost 500 000 enthusiasts.
Numerous personalities have left their mark at Roland-Garros : Björn Borg, Yannick Noah, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Justine Henin and, of course, Rafael Nadal. The latter has won eleven titles between 2005 and 2018, becoming the most victorious tennis player at Roland-Garros since the inception of the tournament.
