Karl Lagerfeld, global fashion star, died
German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, a global fashion star, died on Tuesday at the age of 85, announced the Chanel house of which he had been artistic director for 36 years.
Lagerfeld’s health had declined considerably in recent weeks. He hadn’t even been able to show up to greet the audience after the Spring-Summer 2019 collection parade. He had never failed to do so since his debut at Chanel in January 1983.
LVMH group boss Bernard Arnault said he was « infinitely saddened » and paid tribute to « his dear friend » Karl Lagerfeld.
With his explosive look, the German designer with the look of a Marquis rock’n roll was recognizable among all.
He was at the head of three brands (Chanel, Fendi and its eponymous brand), but his name remains mainly associated with the house on rue Cambon (Chanel), whose codes he has constantly challenged by reinventing the classic tweed suits and quilted bags.
A man of his time, he designed spectacularly staged parades, recreating under the glass roof of the Grand Palais sometimes a truer and more natural beach, sometimes the banks of the Seine with bookstore boxes or an enchanted forest.
Born in Hamburg, Karl Lagerfeld liked to keep the mystery of his birth date alive. For several German newspapers, based on official documents, he was born on September 10, 1933. He claimed that he was born in 1935.
After a well-to-do childhood in rural Nazi Germany, he moved with his mother to Paris in the 1950s. His career began after he won first prize in the « Secrétariat international de la la la laine » competition, tied with Yves Saint-Laurent in 1954.
He knew better than anyone how to capture the spirit of the times. As in 2004 when he designed a collection for the Swedish ready-to-wear giant H&M, an initiative that was later emulated by many designers.
A bulimic workaholic, with a series of collections, Karl Lagerfeld also had a passion for photography and signed the Chanel campaigns.
The « Kaiser » also had the talent to highlight star models: the French Inès de la Fressange, who signed a contract with Chanel in 1983, but also the German Claudia Schiffer, the British Cara Delevingne and Lily-Rose Depp.
