US says ‘disturbing’ Chinese nationals caught fighting for Russia

Les Etats-Unis se sont dits mardi “troublés” par la capture de deux ressortissants chinois qui, selon Kiev, combattaient au sein de l’armée russe dans l’est de l’Ukraine, accusant à nouveau Pékin de soutenir la guerre en Ukraine.

“La capture des soldats chinois est troublante”, a déclaré à la presse Tammy Bruce, porte-parole du département d’Etat.

En annonçant ces captures mardi, le président ukrainien Volodymyr Zelensky a exhorté les Occidentaux à “réagir” et demandé des explications à la Chine.

C’est la première fois que l’Ukraine affirme avoir découvert des Chinois participant aux hostilités sur son sol depuis le début de l’invasion russe il y a trois ans.

“La Chine est l’un des principaux soutiens de la Russie dans la guerre en Ukraine”, a insisté la porte-parole. “La Chine fournit près de 80% des articles à double usage dont la Russie a besoin pour soutenir la guerre”, a-t-elle souligné, en référence aux biens qui peuvent être détournés à des fins militaires.

“La poursuite de la coopération entre ces deux puissances nucléaires ne fera que contribuer davantage à l’instabilité mondiale et rendra les Etats-Unis et d’autres pays moins sûrs, moins sécurisés et moins prospères”, a encore dit Mme Bruce.

La Chine se présente comme une partie neutre et un médiateur potentiel dans ce conflit. Mais elle reste un allié politique et économique clé de la Russie, au point que les Occidentaux l’ont qualifiée de “facilitateur décisif” de l’invasion russe – qu’elle n’a jamais condamnée.
