“World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it.”
So were the words of French foreign minister Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950; the date we now know as Europe Day.
The Consul-generals of the EU member states in Sydney gathered together at the University of Sydney to discuss shared values between the European Union and Australia despite varying political and ideological differences, as well as their unwavering support for Ukraine.
The “Europe Day” of the European Union was introduced on May 9, 1985 by the predecessor organisation of the EU; the “European Communities.”
It’s an occasion that commemorates the Schuman Declaration of 9 May, 1950; which set out Robert Schuman’s dream of a new form of political cooperation in Europe whereby war between Europe’s nations would be considered “unthinkable.”
In Sydney on Tuesday, this celebration took form as a forum and debate, which saw distinguished speakers including Mrs. Vera Jourova- the commissioner of Values and Transparency, H.E Michael Pulch- the EU ambassador to Australia, Ms. Rosalind Croucher- president of the Australian Human Rights Commission, and H.E Vasl Myroshnychenko; the Ukraine Ambassador to Australia.
