Le mois de juillet s’annonce français à Sydney ! Lors du week-end de la fête nationale, la culture française sera mise à l’honneur sous différents angles lors du Bastille Festival. Mais ce n’est pas tout : exposition inspirée de l’oeuvre de V.Hugo « Les misérables », la présentation du travail d’un artiste français à Carriageworks et l’exposition sur John Russel, un peintre australien impressionniste, ami proche d’Auguste Rodin.

La culture aborigène sera également célébrée avec l’événement annuel NAIDOC in the City et l’exhibition des oeuvres de John Mawurndjul, artiste aborigène reconnu.

Profitez de l’hiver pour vous faire plaisir en intérieur avec une belle programmation à l’opéra de Sydney, la magie de l’hiver au Carriageworks winter market et The Dog Film Festival au Ritz cinema. Et pour une bonne dose d’air frais : direction les patinoires installées face à St Mary’s Cathedral et Bondi Beach, ou bien la fameuse course à pied autour de l’Harbour Bridge, avec des vues imprenables sur les monuments emblématiques de Sydney.

Enfin, à ne pas rater ce mois-ci : la tournée australienne de Franz Ferdinand et MGMT, ainsi que le rendez-vous des fans de Kate Bush pour les 40 ans de son célèbre clip Wuthering Heights.

Du 4 au 21 juillet : The Miserables’18

While the curators draw inspiration from the many adaptations of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, it’s going to be really helpful if you recognise that the works in this exhibition are, by and large, uninterested in that story. The sensibility of Les Misérables is what the curators were drawn to; it re-focuses the story of revolutionary Paris as a sprawling bombastic series of stories. It embraces camp and high drama, sure, but all as a method to subvert and rewrite narratives anew. The central concern of Les Misérables ’18 is how we consume narratives. The exhibition asks us to reconsider our perceptions of history and its figures—and the uncanny ways pantomime reflects how our culture actually remembers. More informations here.

Vendredi 6 et samedi 7 juillet : Tribunal à l’opéra de Sydney

Welcome to the Australian Truth and Reconciliation Tribunal we’ve never had. Artists, lawyers, leaders and activists put Australia’s colonial past and murky refugee policies on trial in this powerful piece of political theatre. Each performance is different, with guests airing their experiences and the issues directly affecting their communities. Tribunal is a space where the truth can be told, connections can be made, and intimacies shared. Tickets here.

A partir du 7 juillet : Daniel Buren at Carriageworks – LIKE CHILD’S PLAY (Comme Un Jeu D’Enfant)

Consisting of 100 blocks, arches, triangles and pediments, Buren plays with scale so that the objects, which, as children we towered over now dwarf us. Throughout his career, Buren has created artworks that complicate the relationship between art and the structures that frame it. His work questions how space can be used, appropriated, and revealed both physically and socially. Daniel Buren is recognised as one of France’s foremost contemporary artists. Details here.

Dimanche 8 juillet : The Multicultural Eid Festival and Fair

MEFF is an annual event usually celebrated on the Sunday following Eid-Ul-Fitr.The Multicultural Eid Festival & Fair marks 34 years of celebrations on Sunday 8 July 2018 at Fairfield Showground. Welcoming tens of thousands of people from over 35 communities, with over 150 stalls, amazing traditional cultural performances, free entertainment, thrilling rides and the greatest attraction of them all – an Animatronic life-size Baby T-Rex Dinosaur! Du jeudi 12 au dimanche 15 juillet : Bastille Festival Sydney

Samedi 14 juillet : The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever

Come celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights on the windy grassy fields of Sydney Park! People all over the world will be gathering in major cities and windy moors in their prettiest red frocks. They will experience the whimsical joy that is the 1978 Kate Bush masterpiece, « Wuthering Heights ». They shall dance freely and merrily, frollicking and bounding across the grasses. A partir du 21 juillet : John Russell-Australia’s French impressionist (Art Gallery of NSW)

Discover the work of John Russell, the remarkable yet little-known Australian artist, who was active and influential within French avant-garde circles in the late 19th century. Bringing together 120 paintings, drawings and watercolours – including a number of works by his contemporaries – this major retrospective is the first survey of Russell’s work in forty years. Mercredi 25 juillet : Franz Ferdinand et MGMT en concert

Two of the most prolific bands of recent times, Franz Ferdinand and MGMT, will join forces for their first visit to Australia in five years, with co-headline performances at Melbourne’s Festival Hall (Tue 24 Jul) and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion (Wed 25 Jul), as well as a stop at Byron Bay’s Splendour In The Grass festival. Vendredi 27 juillet : Carriageworks Night Market

Curated by acclaimed chefs and founders of Porteño Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz, the Carriageworks Night Market returns this winter. Fifty-five of Sydney’s leading restaurants, bars and producers will present menus inspired by the theme of Burning Love, using smoke and spice, slow-cooking, heat and flame to showcase locally-sourced seasonal produce. Dimanche 29 juillet : Sydney Harbour 10km et 5km

The Sydney Harbour 5k and 10k distance are fast and flat runs with spectacular views. Starting at the historic Sydney Rocks area, the 10k course is a one lap loop which hugs the harbour foreshore to ensure spectacular views throughout. The 5k takes in some of Sydney’s most beautiful sights. The course starts on George Street, the Rocks and continues around the edge of Sydney Harbour, under the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge before an out and back section along Hickson Road. Tout le mois : John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new

John Mawurndjul is celebrated for his mastery of rarrk (fine-painted cross-hatching), a tradition shared by generations of Kuninjku artists. John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new reunites works of art from national and international collections made across a 40-year period. This exhibition of bark paintings and sculptures tells the stories of Kuninjku culture and the significant locations surrounding the artist’s home in western Arnhem Land.

Tout le mois : Rigoletto à l’opéra de Sydney

From the moment he wrote it, Verdi knew he had a hit on his hands. The story had everything: royalty, loyalty, deformity, devotion, lust and revenge. And the music? The music was sensational. The morning after Rigoletto’s triumphant premiere, that melody rang out in the streets: a hit for ever after. The title character Verdi called the “greatest creation” in the history of theatre had found a home in a masterpiece of music. Elijah Moshinsky’s much-loved production of Rigoletto returns to the Sydney Opera House stage, complete with its glamorous La Dolce Vita-inspired sets and costumes and scene-stealing car.
