A conserver : votre agenda du mois de mai à Sydney

L’été s’est définitivement arrêté et nous avons réouvert notre garde-robe d’hiver pour se couvrir face à la fraîcheur du matin. Une certaine morosité pourrait s’installer chez les Sydneysiders, habitués à passer leur dimanche à la plage… Ne parlons pas trop vite : en mai s’ouvre la « saison de la créativité » avec le festival des lumières, musique et discussions, Vidid Sydney. En bonus ce mois-ci : one man/woman show, spectacle de danse et ballet, exposition d’art et de photos, et bien plus encore !

A partir du 25 mai : Vivid Sydney. Le plus grand festival du monde de lumières et d’idées revient illuminer Sydney pour une 10e édition. L’année dernière, l’évènement avait attiré 2,33 millions de personnes, venues admirer les incroyables spectacles et décorations lumineuses, mais aussi profiter des nombreux concerts live et assister à des échanges d’idées partout dans la ville. Jusqu’au 20 mai : Sydney Comedy Festival. Après le succès du Melbourne International Comedy Festival, le rendez-vous annuel du LOL est de retour à Sydney pour sa 18e édition. Durant un mois, le Sydney Comedy Festival met à l’honneur une ribambelle d’humoristes internationaux et locaux en tous genres qui vous feront pleurer… de rire ! Tout le programme est disponible ici. Jusqu’au 13 mai à l’opéra : Mother’s Ruin – A cabaret about gin. Equal parts historical and hysterical, all heaving harmonies and tipsy candour, explore the history of gin through story and song. Stumble and soar through tales of love and women, gin and secrets, as we wind our way through 18th Century London, colonial India and the jungles of Peru, via sailors and barmaids, bootleggers and master distillers. Part feminist history lesson, part socio-political smackdown, part raunchy cabaret, Mother’s Ruin is the work of performers Maeve Marsden and Libby Wood, two of Australia’s rising cabaret stars at the helm. Mother’s Ruin moves from misery to vaudeville in a moment, intertwining excess and prohibition, history and (re)invention. Tickets online here.

Jusqu’au 15 mai : Emma Hack: Geometric | Flight of Fancy. L’artiste australienne Emma Hack, connue pour son oeuvre dans le clip de Gotye’s « Somebody that I used to know », expose à Sydney ses photographies de body painting jusqu’au 15 mai dans le cadre du Head On Photo Festival. A cette occasion, retrouvez à la Wagner Contemporary deux de ses projets intitulés : « Geometric » et « Flight of Fancy ». Ce dernier met en scène des modèles, dont le corps est peint avec des fleurs, oiseaux et papillons. Le second projet, « Geometric » se rapproche plus du travail qui l’a rendu célèbre, avec des formes géométriques et des peintures sur corps juxtaposées. Retrouvez plus de détails ici.

Jusqu’au 19 mai à l’opéra : Merry Widow. The Merry Widow is one of the Australian Ballet’s greatest achievements. Irresistibly frothy and lavishly theatrical, The Merry Widow has enough tangled affairs, narrow misses and jealous lovers to fuel a French farce. The tiny principality of Pontevedro is on the verge of bankruptcy, and the dashing Count Danilo must rescue his country by marrying the newly widowed and fabulously wealthy Hanna Glawari. Only when they meet does he realise that she’s his childhood sweetheart – and that she hasn’t forgiven him for jilting her years ago. Based on the beloved operetta, this lively tale is set in the ballrooms and salons of Belle Époque Paris and is dressed magnificently in velvets, silks, spangles and feathers. Created especially for The Australian Ballet, The Merry Widow is a laugh-along favourite with hum-along melodies and its heart on its sleeve. Jusqu’au 26 mai : ab [intra]. Explore the depth of human impulse with the world premiere of Rafael Bonachela’s ab [intra], meaning ‘from within’ in Latin. Sydney Dance Company’s 2018 season opens with an electrifying journey into the extremes of human nature. Discover what drives our relationships and ignites our ambitions in this visceral new piece showcasing Australia’s best contemporary dancers. ab [intra] is Bonachela’s latest collaboration with composer Nick Wales and his first full-length work since the epic masterpieces 2 One Another and the critically acclaimed Project Rameau with ACO in 2012. A dynamic work of exquisite athleticism, ab [intra] exposes the shared instincts that drive us apart and bring us back together. Details and tickets here.

Frank Hurley: Photographer & Gardener. Frank Hurley, photographe et aventurier australien, a eu une vie plutôt bien remplie à travers ces multiples expéditions en Antarctique ou son expérience de photographe de guerre durant les deux conflits mondiaux. L’exposition, qui a ouvert le 8 avril dernier à la Manly Art Gallery and Museum, permet aux visiteurs de saisir le travail de l’artiste d’une manière plus intime à travers des images de Sydney prises au début de sa carrière dans les années 1900. Découvrez des clichés de la ville, de l’Harbour bridge, des Northern beaches ainsi que des plantes australiennes, passion du photographe. Plus de détails ici.

Sip, Paint, Create. Attrapez un verre de vin et laissez votre imagination vous guider ! Voici le concept de ces cours de peinture développés par l’atelier Sleight of Hand Art, convaincu de l’élan de créativité que peuvent apporter quelques verres d’alcool. Il s’agit moins d’acquérir une technique parfaite, que de trouver l’inspiration et son propre style. Toute personne (débutant inclus) est donc la bienvenue ! Des artistes locaux vous guideront pas-à-pas dans la reproduction d’oeuvres majeures de Picasso ou Andy Warhol, ou simplement, vous aideront à peindre votre animal de compagnie. Aboriginal heritage tours. Discover the rich Aboriginal heritage of Sydney with an Aboriginal guide in the heart of the city. Located in a spectacular harbourside setting , the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is one of Sydney’s most treasured and iconic destinations. On the traditional land of the Cadigal people, the land now occupied by the Garden is the site where the modern transformation of the Australian continent began and can be regarded as the ‘first frontier’ between Aboriginal and European societies. Join an experienced Aboriginal guide on a 1.5 hour walking tour of the Garden which highlights the significance of the site to Aboriginal people, as well as the rich heritage and culture of Aboriginal people of the Sydney region. Learn about traditional Aboriginal uses for the Garden’s variety of native trees and plants including medicine, tools and food (bush tucker). A partir du 29 mai : Exposition : James Cameron – Challenging the deep. Partez à la découverte des profondeurs de l’océan à travers l’oeil du réalisateur et explorateur James Cameron. Connu pour ces blockbusters, Cameron est aussi un aventurier hors pair qui a mené 8 expéditions majeures dans les tréfonds de l’océan. Cette exposition retrace ses découvertes et ses exploits à travers des projections cinématographiques. Elle présente également des objets technologiques sous-marins utilisés lors des expéditions : scaphandres, instruments de communication sous l’eau, et même une reproduction d’un sous-marin MIR, utilisé pour les recherches océanographiques en grande profondeur. Du 25 au 27 mai : Caffeine Festival. After a sell-out run in 2017, Mr Black’s Festival of the Espresso Martini returns this year as CAFFEINE, a revved up reincarnation honouring the best of Australia’s bar and coffee culture. What do you get when you put Mr Black Coffee Liquor, Ketel One Vodka, world class cocktails by The Everleigh, speciality coffee, and antipasto from Salt Meats Cheese into one warehouse space? Le 29 mai : H.E.R en concert à l’Opéra. Australian debut. Emerging fully formed with the woozy lure of R&B heartache, trap minimalism and a fever-pitch mystery identity, H.E.R. follows two immaculate mixtapes with her Australian debut at Vivid LIVE. A masterclass of steamy modern soul in the tradition of festival alumni Lauryn Hill and Sampha, H.E.R.’s reflective confessionals on identity and womanhood are nestled within serrated pop hooks and bass-praising sonics. Streamed over 60 million times with co-signs from Usher, Alicia Keys and Bryson Tiller — all while collaborating with anonymous online producers — H.E.R. is dismantling the system with songs that bow to no one. Du 24 au 26 mai : Semi Permanent. Ce sommet annuel mettant en avant l’esprit créatif revient pour une 16e édition dans le cadre du Vidid Sydney. Durant trois jours, discussions autour de la créativité et workshops se succèderont, dirigés par des figures majeurs du design et de l’innovation visuelle. L’édition sera présidée par la graphiste-designer locale, Gemma O’Brien. Cette année, vous pourrez notamment rencontrer Tinker Hatfield, designer pour Nike et créateur de la célèbre Air Jordans, qui viendra partager ses 36 années de carrière. Scott Dadich et Patrick Godfrey, PDGs de l’importante entreprise de design Godfrey Dadich Partners, se joindront également à une conversation avec leurs plus éminents collaborateurs, tandis que Paula Scher, légendaire graphiste-designer à New York animera plusieurs workshops.
