    Xavier Miliano
Xavier Miliano (NSW) is a 22-year-old from New Caledonia who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management and Commerce from the École de Gestion et de Commerce in New Caledonia. He has been in Sydney on a Working Holiday Visa for the past seven months.
On May 13, 2024, riots erupted in New Caledonia, particularly in Nouméa, in response to a constitutional reform being debated in Paris. This reform, aimed at expanding the electorate for local elections, faced strong opposition from independence supporters, leading to violent protests, fires, looting, and clashes with law enforcement. These events heightened tensions between those advocating for independence and those in favour of maintaining ties with France.
The violent demonstrations resulted in the suspension of international flights, leaving many Caledonians stranded abroad, including those vacationing in Australia. Local media, such as NCla1ere, reported on the situation, highlighting the challenges faced by these travellers trying to return home.
In response to the plight of stranded Caledonians in Sydney, a spontaneous solidarity network formed to offer temporary accommodation through friends, neighbours, and acquaintances. Xavier actively participated in this initiative, helping to welcome those in need. His support was invaluable in alleviating the isolation felt by these travellers, far from their loved ones. To lighten their forced stay, they were also invited to explore some of Sydney’s iconic sites, creating a warmer and more comforting atmosphere during this challenging time.
