    Anna Jahjah

    Christophe Cornard
Christophe Cornard (NSW), a Franco-Belgian artist, has long been driven by his polyglot skills and boundless curiosity for life beyond his native Belgium. His passion for exploration led him to venture far beyond Europe, participating in prestigious workshops worldwide, which provided the technical foundation he needed as a professional sculptor. A largely self-taught artist, Christophe has, in recent years, truly discovered his creative voice.
Drawing on his experience as a renowned hair stylist, Christophe’s work reflects his unique ability to manipulate volumes and create dynamic shapes while playing with light and colour, allowing them to merge and reveal the essence of the subject. By working primarily with stone and bronze, he aims to strike a balance between positive and negative space, capturing the exact moment when refracted light optimises the surface it touches. In his hands, these traditionally unyielding materials are transformed into sensual, organic shapes that seem to defy gravity, altering the viewer's perception.
What most intrigues Christophe in his personal practice is watching a piece continuously and seamlessly metamorphose as he works, following the ebbs and flows of his energy until it reflects the emotional balance he naturally seeks. By incorporating the intrinsic qualities of his chosen materials and their iconography, he takes delight both in the painstaking process of shaping the material and in discovering the unexpected, multifaceted aura of the final piece.
The bi-cultural artist works in limited editions, adhering to a thematic discipline based on his life path number — a method he selected to channel his imagination and achieve the equilibrium he seeks. His mostly abstract work systematically explores universal themes of nurture and culture, eliciting an emotional response in all who engage with it.

    Edmond Thommen
Edmond Thommen (NSW) describes himself first and foremost as a photographic artist, not a digital artist. For him, the art begins with the camera and his photographs; the digital element serves merely as a palette that allows him to blend and refine his work.
The female body forms the foundation of his artworks. It may be softened and blended, with lines melding and melting into the layers of the piece, prompting one's eyes to actively search for the contours that the mind insists must be there. Alternatively, the model's body may leap from the work like some ancient goddess, breaking through time, stone, and canvas, demanding attention and admiration while appearing to escape the confines of the piece, eluding definition and objectification.
Edmond's work is "layered" in multiple senses of the word. The human body is often layered beneath or interwoven with images of rock, rubble, graffiti, walls, fronds, trees, and more. Each detailed and careful composition beguiles the eye and captivates the mind, creating a visual and interpretative layering that invites exploration.
Allow yourself to discover the deep, complex world that Edmond has created. Bring your perspective and your experiences to the art, and it will reward you far more than any cursory appraisal could. You will not regret it.

Lisa Glastonbury (University of New England, NSW) is a French language teacher, a long-term member and supporter of the Alliance Française de Wagga Wagga, and a postgraduate student at the University of New England, where she is currently completing a Master’s in French Studies by research. Combining her twin passions for cycling and French culture, her Master's research focuses on the global sporting sensation that is the Tour de France.
As a devoted viewer of SBS television coverage of the Tour de France, Lisa stays up through the cold winter nights every July, transfixed by the greatest cycle race in the world. As a dedicated cyclist, her appreciation for 'the Tour' is evident; however, her curiosity was piqued by non-cycling Australians who also appear to share her fascination with the event. Their enthusiasm for the race prompted her to question why they become 'Tour' devotees despite lacking a passion for cycling.
Lisa's research examines the extent to which the 'cultural storytelling' element of the SBS Tour de France broadcast has successfully attracted non-cyclists and whether this reflects middle-class taste or indicates the reception of French culture by Australians.
Watched by 3.5 billion viewers worldwide, including a significant number of Australian viewers—both cyclists and non-cyclists—Lisa's research offers a cultural interpretation of the Tour de France. She employs a mixed-methods research approach, combining online surveys with focus group interviews to decipher the appeal of the race for a non-cycling Australian audience.
Her research argues that a globally appealing narrative sustains viewer engagement with the race. This powerful unifying narrative, which draws on French cultural mythology, elevates the significance of the race beyond a mere sporting event to something akin to a cultural artefact, appealing to the acquired taste of middle-class non-cycling Australians. The race serves as the ultimate French allegory: the route around mainland France symbolises the country's culture, landscape, and history, while the cyclists represent human endeavour and achievement. The French nation is narrated through the race; viewing the Tour de France simply as a cycling competition or mere entertainment misses its deeper meaning. The event effectively becomes an intersection of class and taste, and watching it is an act of distinction, reflecting an aspiration for French cultural literacy and sophistication.
One of her research participants sums it up: for an Australian non-cycling audience, "it's not about the race," but rather about the meanings that viewers attach to it.
Lisa will present her research at the 32nd Annual Conference of the Australian Society for French Studies in December 2024 and has submitted it for the 2024 Australian Journal of French Studies/Australian Society of French Studies Postgraduate Essay Prize.

As a dual French-Australian citizen and keen sports competitor, she represented Australia at the 2016 Triathlon World Championship in Mexico. In her own words, she is the happy mum of three amazing individuals and the wife of a great guy.
Marie is also a Director of the Power Institute, one of two art history foundations in Australia. She previously served as Vice-President and Culture Committee Chair of Alliance Française Sydney. After 20 years in the energy industry, she decided to pursue her passion for the arts, graduating with a Master of Art Curatorship from Sydney University, where she won the Francis Stuart Prize. There, she witnessed firsthand the importance of connections in a competitive industry.
Culture Plus’s main event is the Eloquence Art Prize, a challenge that offers professional and networking opportunities to students from leading Australian universities across five states—the art leaders of tomorrow. The Prize is a public speaking challenge where students compare French and Australian artists on a set theme in front of a professional jury.
The challenge is prestigious and is organised in partnership with the French Embassy, which donates a one-month trip to Paris for the winner to meet with museum professionals. Prizes also include classes at the École du Louvre, mentoring sessions, and French lessons from Australian Alliances Françaises. The Embassy of Australia in Paris has also supported the Prize with a function for the winner. Each year, the election of the winner is hosted in a prestigious museum by its director (AGNSW, NGA, NGV).
Culture Plus is supported by the French Embassy, Australian universities, art history foundations, philanthropists, private donors, and a French corporate sponsor. It takes pride in the invaluable “in-kind” support received from across the French and Australian communities and the art industry.
In three years, its funding has diversified and tripled. Marie is currently working on an Eloquence Art Prize for French students, with the winner to come to Australia. Culture Plus also organises evenings featuring short documentaries by leading French and Australian artists, with events scheduled in Melbourne and Sydney this year. The Musée Quai Branly and Mairie de Paris have expressed their interest in a projection in 2025.

Born in Piacenza, northern Italy, Paola Bastreri-Grey (La La La Chorale française de Melbourne, VIC) has called Melbourne home since she arrived at nearly nine years of age. She completed her schooling in Melbourne and pursued tertiary studies, training as a clarinettist, and graduating with a B.Mus. and Dip.Ed. from the University of Melbourne. Between the ages of 14 and 32, Paola gained extensive musical experience, including orchestral and band conducting, chamber music, orchestral performance, and both instrumental and classroom teaching, primarily at Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School.
At the age of 32, Paola suffered a life-threatening and debilitating stroke that left her paralyzed and unable to speak. With the unwavering support of her family and the dedication of her rehabilitation therapists over many years, she was able to regain enough functionality to eventually return to her musical studies, retraining as a classical singer.
After resuming her musical journey under the guidance of Ruth Guthrie, Paola successfully completed a Dip.Mus. at the Melba Conservatorium of Music (1999–2001) and, in 2004, earned her A.Mus.A. in singing from the Australian Music Examinations Board. Shortly afterward, in July 2004, she successfully auditioned to become the Musical Director of La La La, transforming the group from a handful of disparate singers into a well-blended and cohesive choir of 30–35 members. In addition to her work with La La La, Paola continues to teach clarinet, conducting, and singing; she also directs the a cappella vocal group Colla Voce and serves as a Principal Artist and Choral Scholar in the choir of St John’s Anglican Church, Toorak.
Combining her passion for both languages and music, Paola lectured for four years in Italian Language and Diction to singers at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Music and the Melba Conservatorium. She has led clinics in Foreign Language Vocal Coaching (Italian, French, and German) through Melbourne Youth Music and freelances as a language coach. Since September 2022, Paola has further refined her solo vocal work under the tutelage of renowned operatic mezzo-soprano Suzanne Johnston.
